Acton-Boxborough Regional PTSO, Acton-Boxborough United Way, and Danny’s Place Youth Services are pleased to announce that David McCullough, Jr., best-selling author of You Are Not Special and Other Encouragements, will speak to the A-B community on Thursday, January 7, at 7 PM in the ABRHS Auditorium. Mr. McCullough has spent 30 years teaching high school English, first at the Punahou School in Honolulu and, since 2002, at Wellesley High School. In You Are Not Special, he expands upon the message in his 2012 Wellesley High commencement address, which became a viral sensation. McCullough’s experience informs his view that the pressure to succeed and the expectations for spectacular achievement placed on today’s high school students prevent them from taking chances, learning from failure, and following their interests. They miss out on the joys of learning and living in the present moment. Mr. McCullough, son of the acclaimed historian, has appeared on CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, PBS, and NPR. This talk is open to the community and especially geared to the parents/guardians and faculty of 7th- through 12th– grade students. Free, with a suggested donation of $5 to support future speakers.
